After losing five consecutive times to Leominster, including the past two Super Bowls, St. John’s (Shrewsbury) quarterback Drew Smiley was determined not to allow that streak to reach six. Smiley cemented his place as one of the best all-around players in the state, rushing for 197 yards and three touchdowns, throwing for 250 yards and three touchdowns, and making a game-clinching interception to lead St. John’s to a stunning, 51-42 win over the previously unbeaten Blue Devils in last night’s Central Mass. Division 2 championship game at Doyle Field in Leominster.
The Pioneers (8-2) will face Western Mass. champion Springfield Central in the Div. 2 state semifinals next Saturday at Westfield State University.
