The No. 1 Medfield girls’ basketball team’s 8-0 scoring run in the final quarter of Wednesday night’s game against No. 6 St. Mary’s couldn’t overtake the surging Spartans, who handed the visiting Warriors their first defeat, 64-56.
“It’s really a great win for our program,” said St. Mary’s coach Jeff Newhall.
St. Mary’s was up by 3 points at halftime, and outscored Medfield, 15-9, in the third quarter to establish a decisive lead. With three minutes to play the Spartans held a 58-46 lead, but the Warriors’ run closed the gap to 4 points.
But the Spartans pulled their game together to score 6 of the last 8 points to close it out.
“We got a little hectic, but we finished strong,” Newhall said.
