High school baseball players of the week

Nick Day, Lawrence Academy — Day powered the Spartans to a 4-3 victory over Rivers last Monday with two home runs. Day knocked one out of the park in the first inning for two runs, and in the sixth inning, he hit a solo shot to break a 3-3 tie.

Speros Varinos, Masconomet — Varinos threw a complete game and tallied nine strikeouts against previously undefeated North Reading. Varinos gave up just one hit.

John Lavoie and Ryan Covelle, Medford — The two hurlers combined for 20 strikeouts and each tallied a complete game for the Mustangs. The victories over Everett and Malden helped clinch Medford’s first Greater Boston League title since 2001.

Ryan Murray, Thayer — The junior tossed a five-hitter to beat Roxbury Latin and also contributed a home run and five RBIs.

Mike Dunlap, Natick — The senior captain threw a 10-inning shutout against Framingham. Dunlap struck out 14 Flyers and walked just one.

Connor Columbus, Braintree — Columbus entered Friday’s game against Weymouth as a pinch hitter in the 13th inning. With the score tied, 2-2, Columbus laid down a suicide squeeze for the go-ahead run in the Wamps’ 5-2 victory.
