No. 3 Billerica rolls past 10th-ranked Malden Catholic

The Billerica baseball team came alive early against visiting Malden Catholic Saturday, putting up a few big innings to rout the Lancers, 14-5, and earn a berth in the state tournament.

The third-ranked Indians made contact right from the start against Malden Catholic’s Nick George, scoring four runs in the first inning. George exited after just three innings, having allowed six runs.

No. 10 Malden Catholic made the game interesting, scoring three runs in the fourth and fifth to pull within 6-5. Billerica, however, racked up six runs in its half of the fifth to turn the game into a blowout. Eric Eknaian had a two-run single in the rally.

Chris Murphy pitched four innings for the win and Robby Gambale finished for the save.
