It’s hardly surprising that the most dominant team of the spring was led by the most dominant athlete.
Milford pitcher Shannon Smith led the Scarlet Hawks to their second straight softball state championship, going 25-1 with a .045 ERA. And that’s no slip of the decimal point, as the Kentucky-bound righthander allowed just two runs all year. Milford finished No. 1 in the final Globe Top 20, one of four final Top 20 rankings out Sunday, along with the final Top 10 for boys’ volleyball.
In leading Milford to the state championship, Smith also earned her third straight Gatorade Player of the Year award. Her final career record was 86-4 with a state record of 1,219 strikeouts.
