What to watch today, Sunday, Feb. 9

While you were sleeping:

It was a disappointing result in the men’s downhill on Sunday, as no Americans finished in the top three medal spots. Squaw Valley’s Travis Ganong had a breakout race, finishing fifth, while New Hampshire’s Bode Miller finished eighth. Austria’s Matthias Mayer won the gold with a time of 2:06.23, followed by Italy’s Christof Innerhofer, and Norway’s Kjetil Jansrud. The downhill will be televised as part of NBC’s Sunday night prime time coverage.

Miller was soaring in the first half of his race, but hit a gate and lost some speed on the second half of the course. The 36-year-old, participating in his final Olympics, will also race in the Super G and the super combined.

The US did win gold in ladies’ slopestyle snowboarding, where Lake Tahoe’s Jamie Anderson took the top spot. Anderson was the heavy favorite heading into the new Olympic event. (NBC, prime time).

In women’s ice hockey, Sweden beat Japan, 1-0. Russia and Germany face off this morning (8 a.m., MSNBC).

Medal watch:

Luge begins with the men’s singles on NBC Sorts Network at 8:30 a.m. (live). In speed skating, the women’s 3,000 meter will be part of NBC’s afternoon coverage on tape delay. In team ice dance, the US’s Meryl Davis and Charlie White are in the running, sitting in fifth place overall (10 a.m., NBCSN).

Medals are also at stake in biathlon (women’s 7.5 km sprint), cross country (men’s skiathlon 15 km classic and 15 km free), and ski jumping (men’s normal hill individual). All will be a part of NBC’s afternoon programming.

Finally, curling begins Monday with coverage beginning at 5 a.m. on USA Network (US vs. Switzerland).
