The Boston Cannons earned the top seed in the Major League Lacrosse playoffs but were unable to close the deal, dropping a 13-9 semifinal decision to the Chesapeake Bayhawks yesterday in Annapolis, Md.

Ben Hunt scored three goals, including a 2-pointer, while goalie Chris Garrity had 18 saves as the fourth-seeded Bayhawks eliminated the Cannons while advancing to today’s championship game against Long Island, which defeated Denver, 16-12.

Kevin Buchanan had three goals and an assist for the Cannons, while Matt Poskay and Ryan Boyle had two goals apiece.

Boston was down, 10-3, at halftime and spotted Chesapeake the opening goal of the third quarter before mounting a rally. Buchanan answered Pete Poillon’s goal with his second of the game at 4:59. Jed Prossner pushed Chesapeake’s lead back to eight, but goals by Buchanan, Pat Heim, and Boyle got Boston within 12-7.

The Cannons pulled within 12-9 on goals by Poskay and Boyle. But Garrity, the game’s MVP, came up with big saves down the stretch, particularly after Boston pulled goalie Jordan Burke for an extra attacker. Brian Vetter’s empty-net goal with 1:30 left sealed the deal.
