OCEANPORT, N.J. -- Ghostzapper overtook pace setter Presidentialaffair and drew off to win the $200,000 Iselin Breeders Cup Handicap by nearly 11 lengths at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.
"You never know if they can handle two turns until you run them," trainer Bobby Frankel said. "We always wanted to stretch him out."
Frankel expects to run his horse, which has had a minor foot problem, next in the Whitney Sept. 11 at Belmont. After that would be the Breeders' Cup Classic on Oct. 30 at Lone Star.
Ridden by Javier Castellano, Ghostzapper covered 1 1/8 miles over a sloppy track in 1:47.3. The Frankel-trained 4-year-old paid $2.80 and $2.10.
Presidentialaffair returned $2.10. There was no show wagering in the Grade III stake for 3-year-olds and up because scratches reduced the field to four. Zoffinger finished far back in third, beating only Private Lap.
Castellano kept Ghostzapper on the outside all the way.
"I had plenty of horse," he said. "He did it all pretty easy today and came home nicely."
