Niigon wins Queens

Niigon posted a three-quarter length victory over favorite A Bit O'Gold to win the $1 million Queen's Plate yesterday in Toronto.

The Plate is the first race in the Canadian Triple Crown.

Stewart Elliott rode Long Pond to a last-place finish. Elliott, who was born in Toronto, guided Smarty Jones to victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

The Prince of Wales Stakes, the second jewel, will be run July 18 in Fort Erie, Ontario. The third race is the Breeders' Stakes at Woodbine Aug. 8.

Destiny's hands Grand Destiny passed Singit in the stretch to win the featured $42,535 turf allowance for fillies and mares at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.
