Bird, famous for his odd mannerisms on the mound, including talking to the ball, was nicknamed for the Sesame Street character he resembled, Big Bird. His short major-league career was spent entirely with the Detroit Tigers, where he went 19-9 as a rookie and 29-19 from 1976 to 1980.
Fidyrch, who was from Worcester, attempted a comeback in the 1980s with the Red Sox farm system and played for Triple A Pawtucket. Fidrych passed away in 2009 when he suffocated under a dump truck he had been working on at his Northborough home.
