Yale hockey player wins humanitarian award
NEW HAVEN, Conn.—Yale hockey captain Aleca Hughes has been named the winner of the 2012 Hockey Humanitarian Award for work inspired by a former teammate who died of cancer.
Hughes began Mandi Schwartz Foundation and helped organize the annual "White Out for Mandi" fundraiser game at Ingalls Rink and Mandi Schwartz Marrow Donor Registration Drive at Yale, in honor of Shwartz who died a year ago after a public battle with myeloid leukemia.
The three annual bone marrow drives at Yale have added nearly 2,500 potential marrow donors to the national registry and found at least six people who were able to donate marrow to patients.
The 2012 drive is scheduled for Apr. 19 at Yale.
Hughes finished her Yale career with 30 goals and 61 points in 116 games.
