Former University of New Hampshire standout Bobby Butler, a forward from Marlborough, is back up with the Ottawa Senators. Butler, scoreless in nine career NHL games, was recalled from Binghamton after scoring 19 goals in 41 games, tops among AHL rookies . . . Yale remained the No. 1 men’s team in the USCHO.com poll, while Boston College rose one spot to No. 2, picking up four first-place votes to Yale’s 46.
BaseballTorre likely to join commissioner’s staff Joe Torre may not stay retired much longer. The 70-year-old former manager is leaning toward accepting a job with commissioner Bud Selig that would allow him to stay in Los Angeles. “[Selig’s] got a position that he thinks that I can handle,’’ Torre told The Associated Press . . . The Tigers traded righthander Armando Galarraga to the Diamondbacks for minor league pitchers Kevin Eichhorn and Ryan Robowski. Galarraga was 4-9 with a 4.49 ERA last season, and threw a near perfect game in June . . . Rockies righthander Jason Hammel will get $3 million this season and $4.75 million in 2012 after agreeing to a two-year contract. He made $1.9 million in 2010, when he went 10-9 with a 4.81 ERA . . . The Brewers and reliever Kameron Loe agreed to a $1.25 million, one-year contract, avoiding salary arbitration . . . Reliever Todd Coffey and the Nationals agreed to a $1.35 million, one-year deal . . . Veteran pitcher Jeff Suppan signed a minor league deal with the Giants and received an invitation to spring training . . . The Athletics traded righthander Clayton Mortensen to the Rockies for minor league pitcher Ethan Hollingsworth. College footballGators’ Jenkins arrested for marijuana Florida cornerback Janoris Jenkins, who recently decided to forgo the NFL draft and return for his senior season, was arrested on a marijuana possession charge, his second arrest in the past 20 months. Jenkins was arrested early Saturday in a Gainesville nightclub, but was not taken to jail for the misdemeanor. In a statement issued by the school, new Gators coach Will Muschamp said the incident will be handled internally . . . Auburn’s Gene Chizik won the Bobby Bowden National Collegiate Coach of the Year Award, voted on by the Over the Mountain Touchdown Club in Birmingham, Ala., and the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association . . . Former Southern Cal running back Stafon Johnson sued the university and an assistant conditioning coach for negligence in the weight-room accident that crushed his throat in 2009. Johnson’s suit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court seeks unspecified damages and says Johnson suffered permanent injuries and loss of future earnings . . . Former Iowa wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos pleaded guilty to marijuana possession, and other drug charges against him have been dismissed. Johnson-Koulianos, a senior who is the Hawkeyes’ all-time leading receiver, was suspended from the team after his arrest last month . . . Nichols named Kevin Loney its new coach.
MiscellanyMavericks take on injured Stojakovic After much speculation, the Dallas Mavericks added sharpshooter Peja Stojakovic, who was waived by Toronto last week, and traded center Alexis Ajinca to the Raptors for the rights to forward Georgios Printezis, who is playing in Spain. Stojakovic, 33, has played only eight games this season because of knee injuries, the last on Nov. 26. The Mavericks don’t even know when the 13-year veteran will suit up . . . Hornets officials and political leaders say attendance has been strong enough through January to keep the NBA club locked into its New Orleans Arena lease for at least another season . . . A person familiar with the US Fed Cup team’s plans told the AP that Venus Williams will miss next week’s quarterfinal against Belgium because of a hip injury . . . Sam Hornish Jr. said he hopes to run a minimum of 11 Nationwide Series races this season for Penske Racing after sponsorship woes forced his team to give up his seat in the Sprint Cup Series . . .
