Globe is honored by APSE

The Globe earned eight awards in the Associated Press Sports Editors' annual contest held this week in Long Beach, Calif.

In judging completed yesterday, the Globe received top-10 honors in the Sunday and special section categories, with an honorable mention in the daily category.

There were also five top-10 writing awards: Gordon Edes in explanatory for his behind-the-scenes look at the Red Sox' negotiations with Daisuke Matsuzaka; Bob Hohler in projects for his report on the racial inequities among college football head coaches; Edes in breaking news for his coverage of the Matsuzaka press conference; Hohler in investigative for a series on amateur basketball; and Stan Grossfeld in features for his profile of former Red Sox reliever Sammy Stewart.

Only one other paper in the over-250,000 circulation category earned more recognition (Los Angeles Times with nine awards).
