Boston.com Sports section earns top honor
Boston.coms Sports section was named the Best Sports Site in the country by the Newspaper Association of America at its annual conference in Dallas this weekend.
In bestowing the top Digital Edge Award in the largest circulation category (more than 250,000), the judges particularly cited Boston.coms coverage of the Red Soxs World Series win, saying the site was loaded with enough curse-busting content and interactive features to satisfy any member of Red Sox Nation.
Boston.coms sports section was the No. 1 destination for coverage of the Sox long-overdue rise to glory, they said. This was inside baseball at its best, powered by multiple layers of text, audio, video and fun fan-submitted content.
But the panel also recognized other elements of the Sports section: The Red Sox story dominated, but the site also served readers in search of professional, collegiate and high school sports.
BostonWorks, a jobs site run by The Boston Globe, also won a Digital Edge Award for Best Employment Site. Boston.com was a finalist in three other categories: Best Overall News Site, Best Real Estate Site, and Best Automotive Site. Its five nominations were the most of any company.
Thirty-three online experts, including newspaper- and broadcast-affiliated Web site directors, educators, and classified category specialists, selected the finalists from 219 entries.
