Notre Dame starts Big East exit talks
Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick has had ‘‘very preliminary conversations’’ with Big East officials about the Fighting Irish leaving the conference before the required 27-month notification period ends. Notre Dame announced last month it was joining the ACC in all sports except football and hockey. The Irish will remain a football independent, but play five games per season against ACC teams. Big East bylaws require members give the league 27 months’ notice before leaving. That would keep Notre Dame out of the ACC until 2015 . . . Ex-Oklahoma State basketball player Darrell Williams was freed in Stillwater after a judge gave him a suspended sentence in a sexual assault case in which Williams insisted he was innocent. Williams, 23, had been jailed since he was convicted in July of groping two women and reaching inside their pants without their consent at a party in December 2010.
Reinstated Cabrera not on SF roster
San Francisco outfielder Melky Cabrera has been reinstated by Major League Baseball after serving a 50-game suspension for a positive testosterone test, but he will not be part of the Giants’ playoff roster. Cabrera is back on the Giants’ 40-man roster as of Friday . . . . Giants vice president of baseball operations Bobby Evans said, ‘‘Cabrera’s status regarding the postseason remains unchanged’’ after the club announced Sept. 27 it wouldn’t add Cabrera for any round. The Giants open the NL Championship Series on Sunday. Cabrera was suspended Aug. 15, a month after he was the All-Star Game MVP . He was batting .346 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs in his first season with San Francisco . . . Dave Hansen is out as hitting coach of the Dodgers, who offered him another position within the organization . . . The Rangers said reliever Mike Adams will have surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, a numbing sensation that sidelined him the last week of the season.
Mallinger forges lead at Frys.com
John Mallinger opened a four-stroke lead in the Frys.com Open at San Martin, Calif., making an eagle and two birdies on the final four holes for a 9-under-par 62 and 14-under total . . . Dan Forsman shot a 7-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead over Fred Funk, David Frost, and Larry Mize after the first round of the Champions Tour’s Greater Hickory Classic in Conover, N.C. . . . Defending champion Na Yeon Choi took a two-stroke lead in the LPGA Malaysia, shooting a 4-under 67 to reach 10 under in Kuala Lumpur . . . Past champion Bill Britton and Charlie Bolling shared the second-round lead at 3 under in the Senior PGA Professional National Championship in Aldie, Va. Defending champion Kirk Hanefeld of Acton, Mass., was even par after a 74 . . . Ross Fisher shot a 4-under 67 to extend his second-round lead at the European Tour’s Portugal Masters to three strokes.
Ice time: Baby B’s fall in AHL opener
Jamie Tardif scored in the first period, but the host Providence Bruins fell to the Manchester Monarchs, 3-1, in their AHL opener. Manchester rallied to pull ahead on goals from Linden Vey, Andy Andreoff, and Andrei Loktionov . . . Although Stephan Bonnar never said the words, he certainly felt retired from the UFC. But Bonnar (17-7) will be fighting pound-for-pound middleweight champion Anderson Silva (30-4) Saturday at UFC 153 in Rio de Janeiro, getting the highly improbable title shot after a series of card changes . . . Lance Armstrong’s former manager, Johan Bruyneel, left the RadioShack-Nissan team after he was singled out as a central figure in the former Tour de France champion’s doping program . . . The Spanish basketball federation said it will investigate media reports that Spain damaged its Olympic village apartments following its loss to the United States in the London Olympic Games final . . . Dirk Nowitzki went through a practice with the Mavericks after having his swollen right knee drained for the second time in a month. Nowitzki doesn’t know why the swelling keeps coming back and said that arthroscopic surgery remains an option.
