Kim Smith was the women's winner and Dejen Gebremeskel was the top male finisher at Sunday's Boston Athletic Association 5K.

Gebremeskel, of Ethiopia, finished in 13:37, with Aaron Braun second and Lani Rutto third. Gebremeskel won the silver medal in the 5000 meters at the 2012 Olympics.

New Zealand's Smith won in 15:16, followed by Lineth Chepkurui and Molly Huddle. Smith won the BAA distance medley which includes the 5K, a 10K in June and a half marathon in October last year.

"I knew I was running fast, but I just told myself to push," said Gebremeskel.

"It was great out there, and it's always nice to win," said Smith.

Olympic 1500-meter silver medalist Nick Willis of New Zealand placed first in the men's elite 1-mile race, and Brenda Martinez of the United States made a breakaway finish to win the elite women's 1-miler.
