Boston Marathoners needed to test-drive some cool training gear
Through a partnership with Polar USA, which makes products that track and help maximize your personal training, we're able to offer a small group of runners the opportunity to test-drive a selection of Polar gear as they complete their training in the final month before the marathon.
The catch? We want you to blog about your experiences and share the data acquired with the Polar products.
To be considered, e-mail Boston.com sports editor Matt Pepin with the following info: Name, age, hometown, qualifying time and where you recorded it, and a brief summary of why you should be chosen (including some topics you'd write about, your marathon history, and your interest in training tech).
Those chosen will receive a Polar RCX5 G5 Optimized Training Computer (it looks like a wristwatch) and an s3+ Stride Sensor. The units record a variety of training metrics and feature GPS as well as an online location to upload and track your data.
You must be qualified for this year's marathon and be willing to share the data tracked by the products, especially on the day of the Boston Marathon itself. You should also be computer-savvy enough to set yourself up with a training page on Polar's personal trainer web site.
Best of all, you'll get to keep the gear.
Deadline for consideration is Friday at 5 p.m. We'll pick our team this weekend and get started next week.
- Steve Silva, Boston.com senior producer, two-time Boston Marathon sub-four hour runner.
- Ty Velde is a 16-time Boston qualifier who's completed 12 consecutive Boston Marathons and 25 marathons overall. Ty is now training for his 13th Boston run and will provide training tips for those who train solo and outside, no matter what temperature it is.
- Rich 'Shifter' Horgan is a 19-time Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team member who runs in honor of his father, who died of colon cancer. He will provide updates on local running events with a focus on the charitable organizations that provide Boston Marathon entries for their organization's fund raising purposes
