Kevan Miller is going to be on the shelf for a while due to an injury he suffered in an on-ice scrum against the Buffalo Sabres.

Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said on Monday that the Bruins defenseman has a dislocated right shoulder and is out indefinitely. He suffered the injury fighting Buffalo’s Nicolas Deslauriers in the first period on Saturday, leaving the game after serving his five-minute fighting major.

Miller has played six games for the Bruins this season with a +4 plus/minus rating. The 26-year-old out of the University of Vermont signed as a free agent with the Bruins in October 2011. He has skated in 53 career NHL games, scoring one goal and adding five assists.

Defenseman Matt Bartkowski, who has seen time in just one game for the Bruins this season, is expected to play in Miller’s place for the foreseeable future.

The Bruins next take to the ice on Tuesday, when they face the 4-1-1 San Jose Sharks at the TD Garden.
