Shawn Thornton has signed with the Florida Panthers, the team announced on Tuesday. Thornton inked a two-year deal that will pay him an average of $1.2 million per season.

Thornton spent his last seven seasons in Boston, accumulating 748 penalty minutes over that time. He was a part of the Stanley Cup winning 2011 team, but it was announced after this past season the Bruins would not look to re-sign the 36-year-old unrestricted free agent.

A fan favorite during his tenure in Boston, Thornton was more known for his propensity to drop the gloves than score a goal. He skated in 64 games for the Bruins last season, missing 15 games due to a suspension for an incident involving the Penguins Brooks Orpik.

Thornton is part of a busy day for the Panthers, who also signed free agent forwards Jussi Jokinen and Dave Bolland. The Panthers play the Bruins in TD Garden on Nov. 4, the first opportunity Thornton will have to play against his former team.
