Surprise, surprise -- Guy Carbonneau has been fired. GM Bob Gainey, Carbonneau's friend and ex-teammate, steps behind the bench for the rest of the run. Montreal is currently in fifth place. However, the Canadiens are only two points ahead of ninth-place Carolina, which hosts the Rangers tonight.

This is the second time Gainey has whacked his coach and taken over the reins. In 2005-06, Gainey fired Claude Julien and took over coaching duties.

Assistants Doug Jarvis, Kirk Muller, and Roland Melanson survive.
