Tim Thomas will get his first start of the season tomorrow against Detroit at the Halifax Metro Centre. Manny Fernandez was in the other net in the morning session, indicating he'll most likely be Thomas's backup tomorrow.
* As of earlier this afternoon, Claude Julien hadn't made any decisions on the rest of tomorrow's lineup. No word whether Martin St. Pierre and Mike Egener, who haven't played in either game so far, will see action tomorrow. Zdeno Chara (shoulder), Shane Hnidy (knee), and Chuck Kobasew (leg) are day-to-day, but the bet here is that none of the three will play tomorrow.
* Andrew Ference, who delivered a beating to Andrei Kostitsyn on Monday after the winger threw a high hit, didn't think much of the player or the instigator penalty he drew after the fight. "He's dirty," Ference said of Kostitsyn. "That's the time to take care of plays like that. You want to take care of it during the season, but that stupid instigator penalty is in effect. That's a perfect example of why that rule should be abolished. It's way more dangerous to be hitting like that than to be fighting. It's not the first time he's done something like that. You can't let guys play like that. And he's not going to square off against you. That's going to be an instigator penalty 99 percent of the time. I'm lucky. I'm a small enough guy that I can go after guys like that. A big guy can't run around, chase him down, and pound on him. But it's going to be an instigator penalty even if he does hit me in the head or my teammate from behind, and I'm still going to get the extra. So it's stupid."
* Crack assistant equipment manager Keith Robinson was busy with his needle and scissors today, making some fixes to Adam McQuaid's jersey. In the preseason opener, his name was spelled "McQauid."
* In rinks like Cole Harbour Place, all the players' food is laid out on a table in front of the dressing room. So it's interesting to see the pre- and post-practice choices they have: fruit, granola bars, juice, water, coffee, bagels, peanut butter and jelly, and Timbits from Tim Hortons. A bagel with peanut butter, explained trainer Don DelNegro, is a good option. The bagel provides the carbohydrates, while peanut butter is a low glycemic food, meaning an immediate sugar spike doesn't take place. Not sure who was indulging in the Timbits, though.
