The Bruins signed forwards Jared Knight and Ryan Spooner, both 19-year-old former second-round picks, to entry-level contracts yesterday. In addition, forward Stefan Chaput signed a one-year contract extension. Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

After spending most of last season with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, Knight joined the Providence Bruins, providing two assists in three games. He was drafted 32d overall by Boston in 2010. Spooner split time between Kingston and Peterborough in the OHL before joining the Baby B’s, for whom he had two goals and one assist in three games. Spooner was picked No. 45 by the Bruins in 2010. If Knight and Spooner don’t make the Boston roster this fall, they will return to their junior teams.

Chaput, 23, spent time with three AHL teams - Providence, Syracuse, and Charlotte - in 2010-11. He earned seven points in 15 games with the Baby B’s.

Also, the Bruins hired former University of New Hampshire defenseman Kevin Dean as an assistant coach for Providence. Dean earned a Stanley Cup championship with the New Jersey Devils during the lockout-shortened 1994-95 season. After a 12-year career, during which he played 331 NHL games, Dean served as assistant coach to the Lowell Devils for four years before signing on as bench boss for the Trenton Devils of the East Coast Hockey League last season.
