Questionable moves in Patriots history

The kicker who sealed the biggest win in franchise history in 2002, left at the top of his game to join the Indianapolis Colts, signing the five-year, $12 million deal with a $3.5 million signing bonus in March 2006. It was a move that sent shockwaves across New England. Vinatieri was a legend locally, making 20 game-winning kicks during his time in New England, including a 48-yard field goal with no time left to beat St. Louis in Super Bowl XXXVI and a 41-yard field goal with four seconds to go to beat Carolina in Super Bowl XXXVIII. Vinatieri would confirm that he did not give the Patriots the chance to match Indianapolis's offer after negotiations for a new contract with New England never came to fruition after the 2004 season.
