Ryan was familiar to Patriots fans before he became the Jets' coach. During a Dec. 3, 2007 matchup between the unbeaten Patriots and the Ravens, Ryan, then the Ravens' defensive coordinator, called a timeout a split-second before the Ravens stuffed the Patriots on a fourth down late in the fourth quarter that would have essentially ended the game. Given a second chance, the Patriots converted, and went on to win the game, 27-24.
At a press conference the next day, he said: "I have nothing to hide. I stand by my calls. I'd do the exact same thing again in the future, so you can start ripping me all you want."
