Significant injuries in Boston sports history
Wes WelkerThe Patriots run for a Super Bowl championship was seriously derailed for the 2009-10 season when Pro Bowl wide receiver Wes Welker went down with a season-ending knee injury during the first quarter against the Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium. Welker tore his left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL).
The absence of Welker, who was viewed by many as the team's MVP this season, left a gaping hole in the Patriots receiving corps as Welker caught 123 passes before the injury. The Patriots went on to lose to the Baltimore Ravens at Gillette Stadium in the first round of the playoffs, 33-14.
