Preseason Game 1: Patriots at Washington

LANDOVER, Md. — Despite largely the same roster of veterans and an electric batch of free agent signees, the Patriots open the preseason Thursday night in Washington still looking to answer questions about the team's depth and solidify key contributors.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, for one, will not even start Thursday's game, according to a report. Ryan Mallett will get the start in his place as his development continues.

But through the preseason, the Patriots will likely be looking for answers at running back, wide receiver, tight end, on the offensive line, defensive line, safety, and backup linebacker before cuts begin Aug. 26.

Oh, and there's a long snapper competition going on. It's all in the cards Thursday night as the Patriots play their 21st preseason game against Washington (13-7) following three days of joint practices.

Here are the details:

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.

Records: Patriots 0-0; Washington 0-0.
