FOXBOROUGH — Patriots rookie quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will get the start Thursday night against the New York Giants.
The news was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.
"I'm excited about it," Garoppolo said. "It's a good opportunity to get out there and get some quality reps, so it's going to be fun."
Of course this fuels speculation on backup quarterback Ryan Mallett, who has been considered trade bait for the past two seasons. He played only one series Friday against the Carolina Panthers and was the third quarterback to enter the game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Patriots' second preseason opponent.
The Patriots currently have 84 players on the team's roster and need to trim nine more to reach 75 for Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline.
