FOXBOROUGH — After a rough start for Tom Brady, the Patriots settled in as the team's offense showed spark for the first time in a 42-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles Friday night at Gillette Stadium in the team's second preseason game.
Brady, who threw an interception in the game’s opening drive to Cary Williams which was returned 77 yards for a touchdown, followed up in his second and last series of the game to lead the Patriots on a nine-play, 74-yard drive capped by a 15-yard touchdown to Kenbrell Thompkins. Brady finished 8 of 10 for 81 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Rookie quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was the first off the bench once Brady’s day was done, upending the depth chart a little bit. On his first drive, he completed both of his recorded passes to James Develin, hitting the fullback/tight end combo for a 15-yard touchdown as the Patriots pulled ahead of Philly 14-7. He followed it up with a 13-play. 75-yard drive that culminated with a back-of-the-end-zone touchdown pass to new receiver Brandon LaFell four yards out.
Garoppolo quarterbacked the Patriots through rest of the first half, finishing 6 of 12 passing for 72 yards and two touchdowns.
Ryan Mallett, the focus of much critcism, took over in the second half and led the Patriots on three scoring drives. He ran for a 6-yard touchdown and then threw another as the Patriots stormed ahead of the Eagles, before Nick Foles (8 of 10, 81 yards, 1 touchdown) and Mark Sanchez (11 of 12, 117 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception) helped Philadelphia tie the Patriots 28-28 with 9:36 left in the third quarter.
Mallett followed a Sanchez touchdown pass in the third quarter to Damaris Johnson with an 80-yard drive, capped by a 10-yard touchdown run by rookie running back Roy Finch as the Patriots took the lead for good. Mallett thew a 17-yard touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Brian Tyms and Eagles quarterback Matt Barkley connected with Henry Josey on a 27-yard touchdown screen pass to end the third quarter, the last score of the game.
Mallett finished 7 of 11 passing for 92 yards and a touchdown, a much improved outing from his preseason start last week against Washington when he went 5 of 12 for 55 yards.
