Patriots planning for practice squad

The Patriots are getting players in place for the team's practice squad today. The following players are expected to join the practice squad, but they must clear waivers first.

The Patriots can carry eight players on the practice squad.

LB/DE Markell Carter: The Patriots drafted Carter in the sixth round of this year's NFL Draft. He played at Central Arkansas.

DE Alex Silvestro: Signed as rookie free agent out of Rutgers by the Patriots. He played linebacker, defensive end and defensive tackle at Rutgers. He is 6-3 and 267 pounds.

DL Aaron Lavarias: Joined the He joined the Patriots as undrafted rookie free agent out of Idaho.

S, Ross Ventrone: Waived yesterday. Ventrone is in his second NFL season, he signed with the Patriots last season as an undrafted rookie out of Villanova and spent much of last season on the team's practice squad.

Rookie tight end Lee Smith was also expected to join the bunch but ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Smith has been claimed off of waivers by the Buffalo Bills. TE Will Yeatman also was ready to sign with the Patriots but has been claimed by Miami Dolphins.
