Today starts a once-a-day look at a draft prospect that either has been targeted for the Patriots in a mock draft, has had a private workout for New England or has made an official visit to Gillette Stadium. In the end, mocks are good for discussion and workouts and interviews could be a smokescreen or a sign of real interest, but these are players who make sense as being on the Pats' radar for the upcoming draft.

Name: Cameron Jordan, senior, Cal

Position: defensive end

Height, weight: 6-4, 287 pounds

Hometown: Chandler, Ariz. (Chandler High)

Senior season stats:12 games (12 starts), 62 tackles (33 solo), 12.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 1 fumbled recovery (returned for touchdown)

Career stats: 50 games (32 starts), 175 tackles (88 solo), 34 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, 4 fumble recoveries, interception

Honors: First-team All-Pac-10, honorable mention All-America (Pro Football Weekly)

Combine: 40 dash - 4.74s (20 split - 2.72s); bench- 25 reps; vertical - 31in.; broad jump - 9-9; 3-cone - 7.07s

Why is he a fit for the Pats? Jordan has the potential to be a versatile performer for New England, as an end on the three-man line or perhaps as the elephant role Willie McGinest excelled at during his days with the Pats or even as an outside linebacker in a two-point stance. Jordan, who has NFL bloodlines - his father was a six-time Pro Bowl tight end for the Vikings - has long arms and uses his hands well. He also has something not many other college defenders do: experience in the 3-4. Cal converted to a three-man front in his sophomore season.
