As Bill Belichick always does, the Patriots coach got the typical first-day-of-camp questions this morning, and waxed poetic about the days when camp started on July 5. Guys today, Belichick said with a smirk, "They have no idea."

But as for those guys of today, Belichick displayed a real excitement to get started, then dropped a nugget of info on us.

"Really looking forward to the start of camp," the coach said. "We have a lot of guys that have worked really hard in the offseason and that?s obvious in their physical conditioning and their attitude to be ready to go.

"Unfortunately we have a few guys that aren?t quite ready yet. They?re all in that day-to-day category, we?ll see how it goes on a day-by-day basis. But hopefully we see them out here at some point in training camp."

The natural question: Does that day-to-day category include Wes Welker? "That includes everybody," Belichick responded.

So that's good news. The bad news is that Logan Mankins' game of stay-away (can't call him a holdout, since he's not required to be here) is still going on. Belichick said, "All the players that are here are under contract. And Logan?s not under contract."

Heading out to practice now. We'll see you guys in a little bit.

Here's the full Q&A of Belichick's press conference, as provided by the Patriots media relations staff.
