New England has announced the re-signing of LB Derrick Burgess, confirming news of an agreement which came over a week ago and has long been expected.

Additionally, the team released WR/QB Isaiah Stanback and LB Bruce Davis.

Burgess played in all 16 games last year, his first with the Patriots after being acquired from Oakland in a training-camp trade. The former Pro Bowler had 35 tackles, five sacks and two forced fumbles on the season.

Stanback began last year on New England's practice squad and played in six games with two starts, recording three catches as a receiver, though he also practiced as a quarterback.

Davis spent all of last season on the Pats' practice squad.

Signing one player while releasing two may mean another signing is imminent for the Pats - Robert Kraft implied earlier today that the team may have a third draft pick under contract, but team PR maven Stacey James said an announcement would not come today.
