Stallworth plans a tryout
Former Patriots wide receiver Donté Stallworth, reinstated Monday after a one-year suspension by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and immediately released by the Cleveland Browns, will work out for an NFL team today, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.
Rosenhaus said Stallworth, 28, is willing to play for any of the 32 NFL teams and expects him to sign “in the next couple weeks at the latest.’’ Stallworth has been running routes, catching passes, and working out while serving a one-year suspension levied by Goodell after pleading guilty last summer to DUI manslaughter.
“He is in the best shape he’s been in since I’ve been representing him,’’ Rosenhaus said. “His reinstatement was a very smooth process. He’s developed a very good rapport with Roger Goodell. We are very pleased with the amount of teams interested. Everything in the past is behind him, and he is excited to move forward.’’
Rosenhaus was adamant that he did not want to specify which teams have expressed interest in Stallworth, although profootballtalk.com reported Stallworth would try out with the Lions.
The Patriots, though, seem like a potential fit. Stallworth is an eight-year veteran with experience in the New England system who could provide stability if the Patriots are forced to play part of next season without Wes Welker, who is recovering from major knee surgery.
The Patriots lacked a reliable third wide receiver last season, the role Stallworth filled during their record-breaking 2007 season. In his lone year in New England, Stallworth caught 46 passes for 697 yards and three touchdowns.
Last June, Stallworth pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter after he struck and killed a pedestrian in Miami Beach, Fla., in March. He served a 30-day sentence.
Goodell announced last week that Stallworth would be reinstated following the Super Bowl, and the Browns terminated his contract on Monday. Stallworth caught 17 passes for 170 yards and one touchdown for Cleveland in 2008, appearing in 11 games.
