DENVER — The Broncos had just called a timeout. Defensive lineman Terrance Knighton was on the sideline with the rest of his unit and the plan was for him to stay there once the defense went back out.
But the situation was too critical for that.
Knighton knew the Patriots’ vital signs were low.
They were in a 20-3 hole in the third quarter, facing a fourth-and-3 situation on Denver’s 29-yard line. Going for it was practically their only option.
Knighton knew how big the play was.
“The moment,” he said, “I felt like I needed to be in there.”
