FOXBOROUGH – By the time Danny Aiken sailed the fourth-and-7 snap over the head of Patriots punter Ryan Allen in the second quarter Saturday night, the ball rolling 41 yards from the line of scrimmage to the 3-yard line, the resulting safety should have been the worst outcome from the clumsy play.
But rather than kicking the ball out of the end zone, Allen scooped it up and tried to throw an incomplete pass, which would have moved the ball back to the original line of scrimmage.
With a slew of Colts bearing down on him, Allen took a crunching hit near the goal line and a Colt batted the ball through the end zone. After Allen boomed the ensuing free kick 68 yards, he exited the game with a shoulder injury.
