Aaron Maybin came to the Jets hoping to jump-start his career after two lost seasons with the Buffalo Bills. It appears the former first-round pick will be looking to shed his label as a draft bust elsewhere.

Maybin was waived yesterday, a day after he made the team’s initial 53-player roster. Coach Rex Ryan said he liked what he had seen from Maybin after signing with the Jets a few weeks ago. The Jets also claimed quarterback Kevin O’Connell off waivers from Miami, wide receiver Mardy Gilyard from St. Louis, offensive lineman Colin Baxter from San Diego, and safety Andrew Sendejo from Dallas.

Rookie quarterback Greg McElroy was placed on season-ending injured reserve after having thumb surgery Friday. The Jets brought back O’Connell, a third-round pick by the Patriots in 2008, after cutting him after the lockout ended.

With McElroy’s injury and the team waiving undrafted free agent Drew Willy, New York had only starter Mark Sanchez and backup Mark Brunell as quarterbacks on the roster.

Selmon dead at 56 Hall of Fame defensive end Lee Roy Selmon, 56, died in Tampa yesterday from the effects of a stroke. Selmon was hospitalized Friday. Selmon and his brother, Dewey, were All-Americans in 1975 when Oklahoma won its second straight championship. Lee Roy was the top pick in the 1976 draft, the first pick by the expansion Buccaneers. (Obituary, B10) . . . The Ravens agreed to a one-year deal with Andre Gurode to play behind six-time Pro Bowl center Matt Birk, who had surgery on his left knee at the beginning of camp. Gurode, a five-time Pro Bowl center, was cut by the Cowboys last week, then visited the Patriots, among others, before agreeing to terms . . . A man apparently drowned in the pool behind the home of Texans defensive end Antonio Smith following a party Saturday. Police were called to Smith’s home in Richmond, Texas, about 9:30 a.m. yesterday and found the fully clothed body of Engram Lamar Crenshaw, 37, in the pool. Sheriff’s Captain James Burger said an examination showed no foul play.
