Penguins acquire Morrow from Stars
The Penguins acquired forward Brenden Morrow from the Stars to bolster the team’s second line. Pittsburgh sent defenseman Joe Morrow, the team’s first-round pick in the 2011 draft, and a fifth-round choice this year to Dallas in exchange for Morrow and the Stars’ third-round pick in the draft. The 34-year-old Morrow has 243 goals and 285 assists in 835 games, all with Dallas, and will become a free agent at the end of the season. He waived his no-trade clause to move to the Penguins . . . New Jersey star Ilya Kovalchuk will be out 2-4 weeks after hurting his right shoulder. The high-scoring forward was injured in the third period of the Devils’ 2-1 victory over Florida Saturday night. General manager Lou Lamoriello said Kovalchuk won’t need surgery . . . Kings forward Jordan Nolan was fined $1,436 by the NHL for cross-checking Canucks forward Henrik Sedin Saturday night . . . The Ducks signed free agent right wing Radek Dvorak to a one-year contract. The 36-year-old has 219 goals in 1,191 games over his 16-year NHL career.
Shiffrin error leads to Goodman win
World champion Mikaela Shiffrin straddled a gate in the final run, handing the slalom title to Canadian Ana Goodman in the US Alpine Championship at Squaw Valley, Calif. The 18-year-old Shiffrin had a 1.22-second lead after the opening run, but straddled the gate in the tight middle section in the second run. Goodman had the fastest second run . . . Mo Tae-bum and Lee Sang-hwa retained their 500-meter titles at the speedskating world championships in Sochi, Russia.
Sharapova moves closer to Sony title
Maria Sharapova beat Elena Vesnina, 6-4, 6-2, on a muggy, 85-degree afternoon in Key Biscayne, Fla., moving into the fourth round of the Sony Open. While she completed a career Grand Slam last year, she never has won Key Biscayne, losing the finals in 2005, 2006, 2011, and 2012. In men’s play, top-ranked Novak Djokovic, seeking his fourth Key Biscayne title and third in a row, defeated Somdev Devvarman, 6-2, 6-4. Wild card James Blake lost the day’s final match to Albert Ramos, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. Among the seeded women to lose were No. 6 Angelique Kerber, No. 11 Nadia Petrova, and No. 14 Maria Kirilenko . . . Costa Rica asked FIFA to order a replay of Friday’s World Cup soccer qualifier the US team won, 1-0, during a snowstorm in Commerce City, Colo. The Costa Rican federation said the climatic conditions threatened the physical integrity of the players, left the markings largely not visible, and led to the constant entry onto the field of snow-clearing personnel, which it said was not permitted . . .
