Welcome to the neighborhood

Posted by Eric Wilbur, Boston.com Staff August 27, 2008 08:59 AM

We all assumed that Tom Brady has political aspirations one day, but it appears the Patriots quarterback is taking steps to ensure his future is close by. Like in his backyard.

That “West Coast” matter that Chris Gasper alluded to in today’s Globe? It appears it might have had something to do with an $11 million plot of land that Brady just closed a deal on in Brentwood, on the same street as California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Eleven million.

For land.

According to everyone’s favorite go-to for breaking sports news, TMZ: “Sources close to the supermodel and her 'Errand Boy' tell us Tom just closed a deal to buy a plot of dirt in Brentwood -- on Arnold Schwarzenegger's street -- for more than $11 million. We repeat -- he bought dirt for eleven mil!

“TMZ is in possession of documents which show that Tom took out a mortgage of $8.225 mil that he will pay back in 5 years. The property -- approximately 3 acres -- was purchased under the name TGBE. We're wondering if the G stands for you know who...”

Totally. LOL.

I’m not sure which is more inconceivable, the fact that Brady just paid $11 million for land without a structure on it, or that he’ll be able to pay off an $8.225 million mortgage in five years. Either way, with his offseason travels well-documented, his absence from any preseason game, various injury reports, and now, possibly skipping out on practice to close a real estate deal, well, at what point do you start to worry?

  1. That cracks me up that he would waste that kind of money on a butt ugly model like Gisele!!!

  1. land loans are typically never more than 5 years. there is probably a construction component involved and once construction is complete a regular mortgage is put in place. so yes the loan gets paid off in 5 years or less but it with money from another loan.

  1. You should really stop sniffing behind Tom Brady's butt! After all, you are supposed to report on Patriots, regarding what they do, play football. Do not turn this blog into another stupid entertaining/paparazzi show!

  1. Clearly author is unfamiliar with Brentwood real estate, typical land loans, and brady's buying power....not to mention the ROI on the home in the short term post build. $11M is negligible. And, if marriage is in the future with Giselle, dont forget her income.

    Lastly, who really cares.

  1. If I were Patriot fans, I'd be worried now. It seems as if Brady does not have his job, i.e. football player at the top of his list now. Before he started dating Gisele, he was all about the NE Patriots, now not so much.

Posted by Worried in NE August 27, 08 11:09 AM
  1. I don’t care where he lives, what baseball team he routes for and who he is dating- as long as he is behind the center every game and winning Superbowls that is all that matters. Bring home number 4 this year! Go PATS!

  1. If he has the money, and we all know he does, who are we to say how he spends it? So he dropped $11 mil on land. I guarantee you that land will at least double that in the 5 year span it takes him to pay off the morgage. WIll anyone be laughing when he sells it for a huge profit? Nope - I didn't think so.

Personally, I'd buy a fleet of Ferraris if I had his cash. Would people call me crazy? Sure, but I wouldn't care, because I love the cars, and I have the money to buy them. Let the haters hate. He's laughing all the way to the bank.

  1. Why should it be inconceivable that a guy making 10 mil a yr on the field and countless millions from endorsements could pay a mortgage off in 5 years. The only reason he didnt pay cash for the land was probably to reap the tax benefit of the mortgage.

And I hope the "lol" crap was from TMZ and not a supposed sports reporter. Who cares what he spends his money on? If he missed a practice because he was excused - who cares about that. He gets paid to perform on Sundays. Period. People only pay attention day to day because this is Boston and we love sports. This will not play a role in the success of the Pats this year.

As for your final lines about injury reports and preseason games....when was the last time Brady wasnt on the injury report? How many preseason games did they win last year? Brady will be fine.

I am guessing it has been a slow day for you thus far if this is the best you can come up with Wilbur. Maybe check out some sports related sites and you wont get so caught up in the glam BS. I would much rather read about who is on the bubble or potential pick ups after the next round of cuts.

  1. People, you're missing the point. If this had all taken place off-season, no one cares. But Brady has participated in ZERO pre-season games and has practiced very little. Instead of worrying about his job, Brady is off in CA on a LAND DEAL. Do you see any of the other Patriots player doing this? You all have blinders on here, if you think all Brady has to do is line up under center and everything will be ok.

  1. He'll enjoy that land when the Jets knock him out for good the 2nd game of the season.

This guy is the ultimate metrosexual. He cares more about being pretty than being a football player at this point.

  1. I completely agree with you Wake Up!!!. I love Tom as much as anyone, but this offseason was ridiculous. Every offseason he is one of the players that is always at Foxboro doing extra work and he always wins one of the preferred parking spots...all of a sudden he doesnt want one this year?? Everyone needs a vacation, lord knows he does with everyone following him around all of the time...but missing practice to close a land deal??? I know he was coming off a career year, but he needs some work in a game. Come on Tom....

  1. Dumb comments.........who cares..........yes he has the money and will have more with or without her kicking any cash in, which she likely will do with the I do! Learn something about finance since it's been a long time since new land was manufactured in that area of Cal.

  1. I'm worried...when Romo went gaga over Jessica and skipped practice to vacation with her he went down the tubes and they got bounced from the playoffs.

When Brady spent his week holed up with Giselle he played the worst superbowl of his career. Now he's taking days off from practice to plan the love nest? I think its time I retired my Brady jersey, I'm not a believer in Tom anymore.

Posted by Apcrocket August 27, 08 12:16 PM
  1. To Mike in Oakland..... you need to get a map - and pay close attention to what you're reading!! Brentwood is a well-heeled section of Southern CA - part of L.A. and next to the ocean...it's beautiful and very quiet, air quality is OK as far as L.A. goes,....and a great place to buy a property! (I don't live there....just know about it!)

When you acquire the skills, looks, money, and talent that Tom Brady has,...check out Brentwood as a place to live. I think that you'll like it!

  1. A Brady Fan: clearly you've bagged chicks hotter than Gisele, so maybe Brady should take tips from you. I'm sure you're wife/girlfriend/significant other/women u dream about look much much better than Gisele. All hail.

  1. Oh, please.

Ever heard of closing a real estate deal via your attorney? Who said Tom was even there? And who cares? And what does this have to do with FOOTBALL? I agree with Liri. You're supposed to be reporting on football news, not gossip!!

Posted by Keep it to Football August 27, 08 12:36 PM
  1. The part that cracks me up is that you knucleheads think he was actually there to sign the papers for the deal. I can assure you that he was not and that his lawyer took care of all of it. If he did have to sing anything it would have been signged and FEDEXed back. Many of you have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to loans for land either. Tom was very smart to do it the way he did and I'm sure that he has plans for building a nice house on that land. Lord knows you can't take your money with you when you die so why not spend it now and set yourself up with a nice pad!

  1. I don't know what is more inconceivable... that TMZ hires 12 year olds to spy on athletes or that they are so inexperienced in the ways of the world that they make comments that they do about the people they report on. You'd think these guys would know that this investment would be done by power of attourney and that Tom would not need to "skip out on practice" to close a RE deal, you'd think they would know what earlier posters said about the 5 year deal, and you'd think they would know that $11m is a steal for 3 acres in Brentwood.

What knee knocking idiots. Totally, LOL.

  1. It's a good thing that they formed the partnership of TGBE. She's going to get the place anyway when they get a divorce ( in 7 years or less - JMHO ). It will just be another asset when they have to liquidate the " company ". Save this post to your archives - by the 2014 / 2015 NFL season - they'll be done.

    Posted by - D August 27, 08 12:51 PM
  1. Apcrocket you need to get your news from more responsible news sources! In regards to Tony Romo, his team was off and they were told to take a break and get away from football for a bit. Only our fascination with celebrities in this country would his plans have ever been made public.
As to the Super Bowl....Well what's there to say other than you nothing at all about football. Have you read one thing that's been reported regarding the injuries that Light, Neal, etc. and other OL's had during that game? Or the injury to Brady's ankle that everyone in the world seems to know about besides you? Sure, the Giant's beat us fair and square and it was there day to be sure. But the fact is a lot of the Pats were playing hurt and still are which is the nature of football and not an excuse

  1. Bridget Moynahan lives in a ranch-style home in a middle-class neighborhood. She uses the occasional nanny service as her only paid help. Nothing against this, she obviously can afford this given the career success she's had, but it's not a millionaire's lifestyle. In a few years, Brady will have "his" son over for the occasional weekend during the offseason (when he can take a break from vacationing from Spain to Costa Rica). This "father" will welcome "his" son into a muli-million dollar home with multiple maids, drivers, pool cleaners, the whole bit. This set up is a family counseler's nightmare. Isn't that what child support is for: so that the child doesn't experience a change in standard of living, and lives in the same level of comfort as the non-custodial parent? If this information is true, then obviously Brady's not paying child support or Bridget Moynahan has a really awful lawyer. This is exactly what family counselors caution NOT to do.

  1. Yeah - we'll start worrying when he stops producing. Until then, this is utterly irrelevant. Athletes are - hope this isn't a shock to anyone - humans, too. They live their lives and do things... Just like you! Imagine that?

Then there's yesterday's two sentence & a picture post, followed by this rubbish.

Hard hitting 'sports' insight, indeed. Still easing your way back into it since returning from vacation, eh...

Hope the JETS clock him in the Meadowlands on September 14th to bring him back to reality. I am sick of this girly boy ....

  1. We have been blessed to have a competitive team every year since Brady took over. The guy won 3 Super Bowls and practically won a 4th by himself you thanksless idiots. He did not in any way "blow" the Super Bowl. The defense collapsed. There are 30 other teams with fan bases who pray for a QB like Tom Brady to wear their team's uniform, and all you ungrateful whiners can do is pick on his personal life? He's dating a super-model, and people find something wrong with THAT? It's sickening. Utterly classless. Go put on your pink hats and head over to Fenway you bums.

  1. Wow, Jets fans have come out of the woods. They seriously hate Brady. That's ok, you can at least enjoy A-Rod and the Yankees winning another World Series. Oh, NY's golden boy has no rings to show, eh?

Favre will have an average season this year, barely making the playoffs only to lose in the first round.

  1. the man surpasses almost every offensive passing record last year. the man has R. Moss on the right side. the man has W. Welker in the slot. the man has brought us playoff season, after playoff seaon, after super bowls, after super bowls. if he wants to settle down with his underwear clad super model girlfriend... how could i possible complain? against all the happiness (and money) he has made my gambling and patriot fan self... how can we (or I at the least) fault him for wanting his own happiness.

i guess the only question left to ask is... if i had a super model girlfriend and a huge bank account, would i want to buy land in CA? well, yeah, duh, of course, why am i asking this question?

  1. All the hate for this guy on here is laughable. He is successful and people cant deal with that. Sure everyone on here thinks 11 mil for anything is a waste of money, because you will never see that type of money. The fact is people who make under 100k a year buy houses for 5 times what they make annually. This guy is successful in a huge business and earned his money and gets crap because he shells out less than he makes in a year for a place. And all these parental tutors........give me a break. I am sure you are all model parents, weren't from homes that may have had single parents and were able to live the Walton existence. It isnt 1940 anymore, sometimes people dont get married, have 2.2 kids and live in the 3 bedroom house on the nice culdesac. Get a grip.

The biggest point is - this has nothing to do with sports. The guy has been preparing for the REGULAR SEASON since the SB. That is all anyone should care about. The people running their mouths about how this affects the team are the same people who last year said Moss would flop because he missed the entire preseason. How did that turn out????

Posted by Alpha Male August 27, 08 03:36 PM
  1. Every time I see him in some perfume, jewelry or watch ad you wonder why he's over exposing himself. Also, his very public private life can be a distraction if it's not managed properly.

  1. It's so lame to see few Jets fans dropping their bitterness here, in between oversaturated, mind-boggling coverage of grandpa Farve. It's understood however. They cannot beat Tom Brady on the field so they get really off on something like this..

  1. With a son on the coast already, if LA gets a franchise the new owner would be insane to not open the bank for Tom. This might be the beginning of the end for Brady as a Patriot? Seem far fetched, just wait! It would be great for the league, and Kraft is a "real insider"! He might even play along for the right deal?

anythitng other than putting himself in harms way before the start of the regular campaign.....GO PATS

    Posted by jim s August 27, 08 06:58 PM
  1. Please Globe, don't resort to this crap. This is not a tabloid. You are likening yourself to that piece trash NY Post. He probably got the land for 1/2 price given the current market, so he made the deal. Let's also not forget that his girl is worth four times what he is, so maybe she is splitting it 50/50. Either way, WHO CARES??? Players have homes far from the states they play. It doesn't mean he's any less committed.

Besides, what friggin' Pats fan wants to see Brady play in a PRE-SEASON game with a subpar, if not struggling, O-line???? NOT ME!!!!!! Risk injury for a few highlights in a exhibition game. No thanks. We'll see next weekend, Tom.

Posted by Jaimy August 28, 08 09:18 AM
  1. Why does Tom Brady get all the bad publicity about romancing, adversiting etc. Why not take a shot at Pretty Boy Manning, he's missed pre-season, and does a lot of silly, stupid ads on TV. Let TB and the Pats alone and thr critics pay attention to football, not pesonal maers of the stars. Shame on the nrws madia.
