My great and good friend Mr. Bogg of San Diego sends out a little backstory on what's going on there with the Chargers and their "last, best" proposal to shake dow...er... -- no, wait, "shake down" is exactly right -- the taxpayers for a new playpen. You will also note that the Chargers have failed to sell out the home opener. These two facts, which have nothing to do with each other, undoubtedly will be put together by the NFL and its courtier press corps to tell San Diegans, who have their own problems, to suck it up and line the pockets of Alex Spanos, a bigtime Republican sugar-daddy. Remember also that Spanos is going to be one of the people crying poor-mouth when the owners come next year to knuckle the employees who cripple themselves so the owners can get rich. Remember it also when the water-bearers argue that it's the owners who take all "the risks" as though owning a franchise in a self-regulating monopoly is venture capitalism or something.

Thomas Nast died a century too soon.
