I mention this only because a) there was some wistful dreaming once that the Bruins might hire this guy for the position they like to call The Actual Scorer We Sign Once Every Half Century, and b) apparently, through the efforts of our new sports-talk station, we are obligated to talk about hockey in the middle of July.

OK. Welcome to the next NHL lockout.

This contact is, of course, idiotic. It involves the NHL, so how can it be anything but idiotic? The numbers are ludicrous and the duration of the contract, delusional. Kovalchuk thinks the Devils have a chance to win the Cup? Really? When? Next season or 2027? Which is when this deal finally runs out. When he's 44. There are juniors in high school right now who will go to college, get their MBA's, take jobs as accountants, and then find themselves cutting their first check as employees of the New Jersey Devils to Ilya Kovalchuk.

Of course, maybe the Mayans were right and the Devils are only on the hook for a couple of years.
