Twilight 'Zona
The other day, I mentioned the passage in Arizona of the "There's A Brown Person Driving That Car!" Immigration Act of 2010. I talked about the boycott of the state proposed by various Latino lawmakers. I also mentioned Arizona's sorry history with this kind of thing; it lost the Super Bowl in 1993 because a governor rescinded the Martin Luther King Day holiday, in a decision that was Not About Race, because nothing ever is.
However, on his electric teevee program the other night, Ketih Olbermann brought upa point that I'd missed. A great number of major-league baseball teams have their spring training sites in Arizona. Most, if not all, of those teams have players of various Latino origin. This is also true of the Arizona Diamondbacks and the several minor-league teams that play their entire seasons there. Baseball has been very, very good to Arizona. Be a shame if something happened to change that.
