Oh, this guy Mikhail Prokhorov, who's very close to owning the New Jersey Nets just in time for the team's move to Brooklyn, turning out to be a real prize. I don't mean to sound unfair. but anyone who became a "billionaire" in Russia after the wall fell has a pretty high presumption-of-dubiousness to overcome from the start, but being linked in any way to Robert Mugabe doesn't make him look very good, either. And that's not even getting into how thoroughly the whole real-estate end of this deal reeks to high heaven.

No, David Stern, if you can get blindsided by something like this, I don't believe your vetting has been anywhere near rigid enough. The NHL has had its own problems with post-Communist Russian businessmen. It's time for the league to tell this guy that his money's good for buying a luxury suite, but nothing else.
