I have one commenter in particular who believes that I hate soccer. This is palpably not true. I once went to Qatar to watch a soccer tournament, and this was before we turned the place into an aircraft carrier. (I also met the Emir's snooker coach, a Liverpudlian who'd once played in a skiffle group that lost a battle of the bands to John Lennon and the Quarrymen.) And my devotion will become more than manifest next summer, during This Space's Live Saloon Blogging of World Cup 2010.

Anyway, how can you not love a sport that brings you stories like this? And the fact that one of the principals in the tale is named Eidur Gudjohnsen should not make anyone laugh, either.
