Berry carries Harvard past Maine

Brogan Berry scored 20 points and handed out six assists to lead Harvard to a 73-54 season-opening victory over host Maine yesterday in Orono.

Victoria Lippert had 17 points for the Crimson, while Emma Markley added 12 points.

Katelyn Vanderhoff scored 12 points to lead the Black Bears, while Samantha Wheeler and Amber Smith each had 11 points. Maine’s Corinne Wellington had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Maine led at the break, 29-28, but the Crimson limited the Bears to 22.6 percent shooting in the second half while hitting 57 percent of their shots (16 for 28). Harvard also took advantage of 20 Maine turnovers, converting them into 30 points.

Baylor 93, Montana St. 56 — Melissa Jones had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead six players in double figures, and the second-ranked Lady Bears (2-0) overcame a slow start to defeat the Bobcats (0-2) in Waco, Texas.

Oklahoma 76, Wisconsin-Milwaukee 59 — Danielle Robinson scored 16 of her 20 points in the second half to lead the No. 10 Sooners to a victory over the Panthers in the season opener for both teams in Milwaukee.

Kansas St. 64, St. John’s 53 — Mariah White scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Wildcats (2-0) to a victory over the No. 14 Red Storm (1-1) in the title game of the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic in Manhattan, Kan.

Nadirah McKenith scored 24 points for St. John’s.

Maryland 73, Monmouth 40 — Freshman Laurin Mincy scored 15 points to lead the No. 21 Terrapins to a season-opening victory in College Park, Md.

Iowa St. 58, Western Illinois 32 — Kelsey Bolte scored 25 points to pace the No. 20 Cyclones to a season-opening win in Ames, Iowa.

Duke 69, Brigham Young 54 — Karima Christmas scored 20 points as the No. 6 Blue Devils opened their season with a victory in Durham, N.C.

Georgetown 79, Augusta St. 41 — Sugar Rodgers scored 13 points and matched her career high with six steals in the No. 13 Hoyas’ victory in Washington.

Blaire Egardo scored 20 points for Augusta State.

Iowa 50, Arkansas St. 47 — Kamille Wahlin scored 14 points to lead the No. 22 Hawkeyes (2-0) over the Red Wolves (1-1) in the Islander Tip-Off title game in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Nebraska 95, Vermont 38 — Lindsey Moore scored a game-high 17 points to lead five players in double figures as the No. 23 Huskers romped over the Catamounts in the season opener for both teams in Lincoln, Neb.

Ashley Hoyt led Vermont with 11 points.

Michigan St. 90, IPFW 62Porsche Poole scored 12 points to lead a balanced attack for the No. 25 Spartans in a season-opening victory over the Mastodons in East Lansing, Mich.

Rhode Island 59, Colgate 47 — Lara Gaspar (11 points, 12 rebounds) and Sherrie Session (10 points, 10 rebounds) each posted double-doubles as the Rams opened the season with a win over the Raiders in Kingston, R.I.

Southern Conn. 81, Bridgeport 50 — Sylvonya Moore had 18 points and Shelley Pierson added 14 to lead the Owls (2-0) to a rout of the host Cougars (0-2).
