Brayden Irwin had a hat trick and Justin Milo scored twice as 18th-ranked Vermont pummeled Northeastern, 9-2, last night in Burlington, Vt.
The Catamounts (11-7-2, 5-6-2 Hockey East) also got goals from Sebastian Stalberg, Jack Downing, Brian Roloff, and Tobias Nilsson-Roos, lighting the lamp five times in the second period against the shellshocked Huskies (9-11-1, 5-10-1).
Irwin’s three goals boosted his team-leading total to 10. He also has a team-high 21 points in 20 games.
“It just feels great,’’ Irwin said. “I mean, those kind of games don’t come around too often, but I think it’s a result of a great team effort. Right from the start we had everyone firing at all cylinders and it was a real collective effort tonight.’’
After NU freshman goalie Chris Rawlings allowed his fifth goal with 4:20 left in the second period, he was pulled for Bryan Mountain, but the fellow freshman didn’t fare any better, allowing two more goals before the period ended.
Rawlings finished up in the third period as NU surrendered nine goals for the first time since Nov. 2, 1996.
Providence 3, Maine 2 - Matt Bergland and Kyle MacKinnon each had a goal and an assist, Alex Beaudry made 36 saves, and the Friars capped an impressive weekend in Providence with an upset of the 16th-ranked Black Bears (11-9-2, 8-6-1 Hockey East).
Aaron Jamnick and MacKinnon scored 48 seconds apart in the final minute of the second period to put Providence ahead for good as the Friars (9-10-1, 4-8-1), coming off a win over Boston University Friday night, climbed out of the conference cellar.
UMass 2, UMass-Lowell 1 - Matt Irwin scored a power-play goal with 1:07 remaining at Tsongas Arena, leading the No. 19 Minutemen (14-8-0, 9-6-0 Hockey East) to a weekend sweep of the 15th-ranked River Hawks (12-9-2, 6-6-2).
UNH 5, Dartmouth 2 - Blake Kessel had four assists and Paul Thompson had two goals and an assist as the No. 20 Wildcats (10-7-4) captured the intrastate Riverstone Cup over the Big Green (4-12-0) in Manchester, N.H.
UConn 2, RIT 1 - Freshman Tom Janosz and sophomore Josh Bernard each scored their first collegiate goals and the Huskies (3-16-3, 3-11-3) pulled off the upset of the visiting Tigers (12-9-1, 12-3-1), ending RIT’s 13-game unbeaten streak in Atlantic Hockey.
Yale 8, Brown 5 - Broc Little scored twice and the fifth-ranked Bulldogs (10-4-3, 6-2-2 ECAC) scored five power-play goals in turning back the pesky Bears (5-11-1, 3-6-1) in New Haven.
Air Force 3, Bentley 0 - Paul Weisgarber and Stephen Carew each had a goal and an assist, leading Air Force (11-8-5, 11-4-5 Atlantic Hockey) past Bentley (9-10-3, 7-7-2) in Watertown.
St. Cloud State 3, Quinnipiac 2 - David Eddy scored twice and Mike Lee finished with 35 saves, helping the 14th-ranked Huskies (14-7-3) send the host Bobcats (13-9-1) to their sixth straight loss.
Norwich 5, Saint Anselm 0 - Craig Serino had a goal and two assists and Ryan Klingensmith made 15 saves to earn his fourth shutout, lifting the Cadets (12-0-2, 8-0-1 ECAC East), ranked second in Division 3, past the visiting Hawks (6-5-1, 4-4-1).
Middlebury 3, Wesleyan 1 - Chris Brown scored twice and the seventh-ranked Panthers (7-1-4, 4-0-4 NESCAC) extended their unbeaten streak to nine games (6-0-3) with a win in Middletown, Conn.
Amherst 2, Tufts 0 - Jack Baer broke a scoreless tie at 15:18 of the third period and Jamie Hawkrigg sealed the win with a power-play tally with 1:51 left, boosting the ninth-ranked Lord Jeffs (10-2-2, 5-2-2 NESCAC) past the visiting Jumbos (7-5-1, 4-4-1).
Providence 3, UNH 2 - Jean O’Neill scored twice and added an assist and the Friars (9-7-8, 5-3-4-2 Hockey East) upset the third-ranked Wildcats (13-3-4, 7-2-1-0) in Durham, N.H.
