The University of Massachusetts turned up the pressure early and really cranked it up late, but only once did the No. 17 Minutemen sneak one past Providence goalie Alex Beaudry, who racked up 47 saves in the Friars’ 2-1 victory in a Hockey East clash at Mullins Center in Amherst last night.

Beaudry, a sophomore, was on his way to establishing a career high when he turned back 15 shots in the first period and 12 more in the second. UMass (4-1-0, 3-1-0) got on the board at 1:49 of the third on a Matt Irwin tally, then was stonewalled the rest of the way, Beaudry making three saves during a late power play.

Providence (5-2-0, 1-1-0) had fewer scoring chances, but got to UMass goalie Paul Dainton (26 saves) twice. Kyle MacKinnon had the first goal of the game 6:15 in, and Matt Bergland doubled the lead at 10:53 of the second.

Wisconsin 6, UNH 1 - Jordy Murray scored two goals and assisted on another, and the Badgers (3-2-1) outscored the Wildcats, 10-2, in sweeping the weekend series in Wisconsin.

Steve Moses scored New Hampshire’s only goal in the third. Brian Foster had 30 saves for the Wildcats (4-2-0) and Matt DiGirolamo had nine.

Yale 5, Princeton 2 - Playing their season opener, the visiting Bulldogs erupted for four goals in the third, three on assists from Brian O’Neill.

Broc Little put Yale on top, 3-2, at 5:22 of the third. Andrew Miller padded the lead at 13:04 and Sean Backman had an empty-netter.

AIC 4, Holy Cross 4 - Tom Mele tied the game with 11:18 to play, and the Yellow Jackets (1-3-1, 1-1-1 Atlantic Hockey) and Crusaders (2-3-1, 2-1-1) skated to a draw in Worcester.

RIT 7, UConn 0 - Dan Ringwald had a natural hat trick in the first period for the host Tigers (2-5-0, 2-2-0 Atlantic Hockey). UConn fell to 0-6-0.

Mercyhurst 6, Bentley 2 - The Lakers (2-5-1, 2-1-1 Atlantic Hockey) got a weekend split in Watertown as Steve Cameron had a goal and two assists. Marc Menzione scored twice for the Falcons (2-3-0, 2-1-0).

Sacred Heart 3, St. Lawrence 3 - Steven Legatto made 31 saves for the visiting Pioneers (2-2-1), while Alex Petizian stopped 34 shots for the Saints (4-2-1).

UNH 3, UConn 1 - The fourth-ranked Wildcats (6-1-2, 2-0-0-0 Hockey East) received a goal and two assists from Kelly Paton in Durham, N.H.

Cornell 4, Harvard 3 - The Big Red (2-2-0, 2-0-0 ECAC) slipped past the No. 8 Crimson (1-1-0, 1-1-0) in Ithaca, N.Y., behind two strikes from Melanie Jue.

BU 3, Providence 1 - The No. 10 Terriers (3-1-4, 1-0-0-0 Hockey East) won for the first time at Schneider Arena, getting two goals from Jenelle Kohanchuk.

Northeastern 1, Vermont 0 - Brittany Esposito’s shorthanded goal with 6:32 remaining gave the Huskies (6-1-1, 3-0-1-1 Hockey East) the road win.
