Sophomore forward Kyle Reynolds scored two goals and freshman Brody Hoffman stopped 19 shots to lead Vermont to a 3-0 Hockey East victory over Maine Saturday night at Gutterson Field House.
Hoffman made 19 saves to earn the shutout as the Catamounts (8-14-4, 5-10-4) used smothering defense in the victory. The Black Bears (8-15-5, 4-10-5) were held to one shot in the second period.
Reynolds scored the game’s first goal with 48 seconds remaining in the second period, beating Maine goalie Martin Ouellette (26 saves).
He struck again at 3:58 of the third period, with assists going to Caylen Walls and Chris McCarthy.
McCarthy closed out the scoring with an unassisted strike at 8:30.
Quinnipiac 3, Colgate 2 — Kellen Jones scored twice and Eric Hartzell made 17 saves as the No. 2-ranked Bobcats (21-3-4, 14-0-2 ECAC) beat the host Raiders (13-11-3, 5-8-3) to extend their NCAA-leading undefeated streak to 21 games (18-0-3).
Freshman Soren Jonzzon scored his first career goal midway through the second period to give Quinnipiac the lead for good.
Hartzell improved to 21-2-4, giving him the most wins in a season in program history.
Norwich 4, Skidmore 3 — Freshman Dean Niezgoda scored twice to lead Division 3’s No. 1-ranked Cadets (20-2-0, 15-1-0) past the Thoroughbreds (11-11-2, 8-8-1) at Northfield, Vt., to clinch their 15th straight ECAC East regular-season title.
Niezgoda scored the winner at the 13:06 of the third period to briefly give the Cadets a two-goal lead off assists from Blake Forkey and Kyle Thomas.
Maine 4, Vermont 3 — Brianne Kilgour had two goals and an assist as the Black Bears (5-19-3, 2-12-2 Hockey East) scored four first-period goals to defeat the Catamounts (7-17-3, 5-8-3) at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
