Tim Hightower and David Freeman each ran for two touchdowns as 12th-ranked Richmond beat No. 2 Hampton, 38-10, last night in the opening round of the Division 1-AA playoffs in Hampton, Va.
Freeman carried the ball 21 times for 117 yards, including two 2-yard touchdown runs. Hightower scored from 3 yards and 8 yards, with a total of 73 yards on 15 carries.
Hightower and Freeman took over after halftime (tied at 10) to put the game out of reach and give the Atlantic 10's Richmond (9-3) its eighth straight win.
The Spiders meet Furman next.
Texas State 50, Georgia Southern 35 -- Barrick Nealy passed for 400 yards and four touchdowns, and the fourth-ranked Bobcats (10-2) scored 27 points in the fourth quarter to come from behind and beat the No. 6 Eagles (8-4) in San Marcos, Texas, in the first round of the playoffs and advance to meet Cal Poly.
N. Iowa 41, E. Washington 38 -- At Cedar Falls, Iowa, Brian Wingert kicked a 31-yard field goal with 51 seconds left to cap a fourth-quarter comeback that carried the seventh-ranked Panthers (9-3) past the No. 15 Eagles (7-5) in their playoff opener. Northern Iowa travels to top seed New Hampshire next Saturday.
Cal Poly 35, Montana 21 -- James Noble rushed for 188 yards and scored a touchdown in each quarter to lead the No. 10 Mustangs (9-3) over the No. 9 Grizzlies (8-4) in the first round in Missoula, Mont.
Appalachian St. 34, Lafayette 23 -- In Boone, N.C., Richie Williams threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to Daniel Bettis, breaking a tie and leading the No. 5 Mountaineers (9-3) over the No. 25 Leopards and into the next round vs. Southern Illinois.
S. Illinois 21, E. Illinois 6 -- Arkee Whitlock ran for three touchdowns and the defense of the Salukis (9-3) kept the No. 19 Panthers out of the end zone as they won their first-round playoff game in Charleston, Ill.
Furman 14, Nicholls State 12 -- Ingle Martin overcame a sluggish passing game and Brandon Mays had 61 yards rushing to lead the No. 3 Paladins (10-2) over the 21st-ranked Colonels in the first round in Greenville, S.C.
