Cross roads time for the Boston College football team this afternoon as it plays in its first road game of the season at Carter-Finley Stadium . With freshman quarterback Chase Rettig listed as doubtful with a sprained left ankle, BC coach Frank Spaziani tabbed the former incumbent QB Dave Shinskie to start for the Eagles Shinskie sounded more confident during the week--and assertive. That could be a good sign.
Let's see what happens.
NC State 10, Boston College 0
NC State, led by quarterback Russell Wilson, took the opening kickoff and raced down the field in a precision 14 play march which took the Wolfpack from their own 19 to the BC 23. On the drive, Wilson complete 9 of 11 passes. But the defense finally came up with a stop and forced the Wolfpack to send in Josh Czajkowski to come in and kick a 40 yard field goal to give State a 3-0 lead.
The Wolfpack took advantage of a special teams mistake by BC when Dontae Johnson blocked a Ryan Quigley punt on the BC nine. The ball was recovered in the end zone by D.J. Green for the touchdown which increased the State lead to 10-0..
The Eagles had one scoring opportunity as Dave Shinskie brought them into scoring territory. The Eagles reached the NC State 19, but a Nate Freese field goal attempt was wide left.
NC State 27, Boston College 10
BC finally got on the scoreboard following a Mark Herzlich interception gave the Eagles the ball on the NC State 18. But the Eagles could not push the ball in for the TD, settling in for a 23 yard field goal by Freese to make it 10-3.
NC State and Wilson countered quickly, however, as Wilson took the Wolfpack 76 yards in 7 plays, ending the scoring drive with a 23 yard TD pass to wide receiver Owen Spencer which increased the State lead to 17-3.
Wilson, who did show some weaknesses by throwing a pair of first half interceptions continued to take apart the Eagle defense, taking the Wolfpack 60 yards in 6 plays, with the march ending with a 5 yard TD pass to wide receiver Darrell Davis to increase the NC State lead to 24-3.
The Eagles still showed signs of life as Shinskie again brought them into Wolfpack territory with a key third down pass to Bobby Swigert giving the Eagles a first down at the State 25 as the clock wound down towards halftime.
Shinskie then finally broke the TD barrier, connecting with Ifaneyi Momah on a 15 yard TD pass with 2:21 left. Even that didn't come easily as Momah fumbled the ball as he cross the goal line But a review upheld the TD.
Wilson was not done. He brought the Wolfpack to the BC 26 where Czajkowski came in and booted a 44 yard field goal to give State a 27-10 halftime lead.
NC State 34, Boston College 10
The Wolfpack was on cruise control ,just waiting to pounce and the first opportunity came five minutes into the third quarter when State cornerback C.J. Wilson picked off a Shinskie pass at the BC 28 and sprinted into the end zone for the TD, which increased the NC State lead to 34-10.
BC coach Frank Spaziani had seen enough and inserted Mike Marscovetra at QB, but Marscovetra and the Eagles could do little in a game which had already been decided. The third period ended with State driving for another score.
