Mark Herzlich's comeback will have to wait--for a few days at least. The Boston College linebacker, who is making an attempt to comeback from a battle with bone cancer, missed the first day of the Eagles' practice this afternoon with what is believed to be a minor (right) foot injury suffered during a summer drill .
Herzlich, who had a MRI done this morning, said that the doctors have told him it should not impede his comeback
""Yeah, it's frustrating,'' said Herzlich this afternoon. ""It doesn't get much more frustrating, to be honest. Mentally preparing to come back for the first day and being ready to go was obviously one of the goals. With my leg, that is fine and that's ready to
go. This foot set me back. It's frustrating, I've just got to take it in stride.''
Herzlich said the injury occurred during a simple drill. "" We were doing some different sand workouts and different turf workouts. I
think it happened a couple of weeks ago when we were doing a sand workout and
then got back on the turf. I think the change of the surface hurt the foot.''
. "They told me that if it happened at the end of the season and we had three games left, that I could just play with it and it would get better after the season,'' said Herzlich, whose comeback from Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare and deadly form of bone cancer (left leg) has been well chronicled. ""This early, we just decided to give it a few more days.''
BC coach Frank Spaziani has emphasized that Herzlich's return to playing football would be miraculous'', said that the Eagles would just wait and see how Herzlich responded and react accordingly.
One day into raining camp for the Eagles and Spaziani's team already has a new look on the defensive depth chart.
Specifically on the defensive line, where Bryan Murray, a 6-2, 295 pound sophomore and Conor O'Neal, a 6-foot-3 inch 299 pound sophomore were listed as the Eagles starting defensive tackles.
The shift was caused by the absence of Kaleb Ramsey ,who was not at practice this afternoon nor is even in camp as he deals with some personal issues. Damik Scafe, the Eagles other projected starting defensive tackle, has been dealing with back issues and is also out of action.
Other things of note on the first depth chart of the season: Wide Receiver Billy Flutie or Ifeanyi Momah or Johnathan Coleman are listed on the first team. At weakside linebacker, Will Thompson or Mike Morrissey are on the first team. The same situation exists at the field cornerback slot where DeLeon Gause or Donnie Fletcher are listed at first team....The Eagles will have four scrimmages during training camp. After Saturday's initial scrimmage, the second scrimmage is scheduled for Wednesday August 18th, with the third scheduled for the following Sunday, August 22nd. The final scrimmage of camp will be on Wednesday August 25th. The Eagles open their season at home against Weber State on Sept. 4th...Spaziani said that Momah would be a wide receiver AND be used in third down situations as a pass rusher on defense.
